Abstract

1306228 Disc mowers SPERRY RAND Ltd N W MEEK and D E MORRISH 8 May 1970 [16 May 1969] 25170/69 Heading A1F An under-driven disc cutter bar mechanism for a tractor mounted mower comprises a cutter bar 1 in the form of a shallow trough of generally oblong cross-section on which cutter discs 2, 3 (preferably four) are mounted. Drive from the tractor power take-off to the discs is transmitted preferably by a belt through a drive direct-drive bevel gear 9, 10 by way of a drive pinion 11 coupled by a single idler 12 to the spur pinion 4 of the first disc. Idler pinions 6, 7 between each disc spur pinion ensure that adjacent discs rotate in opposite senses. Drive pinion 11 and preferably idler pinion 12 are larger in diameter than the other pinions and the arrangement is such that the cutters of the first disc 2 just clear the bevel gear box. As shown pinions 11, 12 are offset and bar 1 tapers away from the gear box such that its forward facing edge is parallel to the line of the forward facing portion of the discs. The gear-box may be supported by a narrow shoe 15 which in use, runs on previously cut stubble.
