Abstract

1305769 Rolling tubes SUPERIOR TUBE CO 24 July 1970 [29 July 1969] 36042/70 Heading B3M A tube rolling mill comprises a roll housing 23 with two sets of three rolls 45, 47, 39 &c. reciprocable along a mandrel 37 and a cam housing 11 also reciprocable along the mandrel and having pairs of cams 45*, 45**, 47*, 47** &c. which engage the roll trunions to move the rolls radially of the tube during relative movement of the housings. The cam housing 11 is reciprocated by a crank arm 21 connected to a flywheel 19. A pinion 25 engaged with a fixed rack 27 is driven by a second rack 29, on the cam housing engaged with a pinion 26 so that the common pinion axis moves. Thus axis is connected by a rod 31 to the roll housing so that the housings are relatively reciprocated. The tube 33 is introduced through an opening 35 in the roll housing which is normally within the cam housing. The tube is advanced and rotated between each stroke of the housings by gripping apparatus 36-38. The rolls of the adjacent sets are offset by 60 degrees and spring- biased or hydraulically biased outwards towards the cams. The mandrel 37, Fig. 4, has a taper formed preferably by straight surfaces arranged to coincide with the working position of each of the roll sets. In operation the rolls work on the tube both on the forward and the return stroke. One set of rolls 39, (41) (43), Fig. 2 (not shown), serve essentially to reduce the internal diameter of the tube and the other set 45, 47, 49, Fig. 3, serve essentially to reduce the wall thickness. The shape of each working roll forms the invention of Specification 1,305,770.
