1305490 Stringer tapes INTERBREV SA 25 Sept 1970 [9 Oct 1969 25 March 1970] 45913/70 Headings D1E and D1K A stringer tape comprises a single ply fabric body 10 with a double ply selvedge 16 with a helically arranged selvedge thread 11 of deformable material trapped therein with its loop ends 15 projecting from the edge of the fabric. The ends of the loops 15 are deformed by means on the loom to form hook shapes so that the tape may be used in a sliding clasp fastener. The tape is woven by having an auxiliary sheet of warps 9 spaced above one of the main sheets 2, and always maintaining the same relative position thereto, double picks 4 of weft being inserted by a needle 24 between the main sheets 1 and 2, and double picks of selvedge thread being inserted from the opposite side between the auxiliary sheet 9 and the main sheet 2 by a second needle 28. One loop of selvedge thread is inserted for every two or more loops of weft, and the top ply of the selvedge is attached to the main ply by alternate weft picks 107, Fig. 25 and warp threads 111 corresponding to the upper main sheet of warp 2. The projecting loops 15 are formed by the entwinement of the selvedge thread 11 around a needle 31 which is supported only by the loops 15 themselves. Various embodiments of the needle are described, Figs 5-11 and 14 and 15, not shown all having a nose portion, such as 34, Fig. 4 projecting laterally from the shank around which the selvedge thread is entwined. The needle 31 is maintained in the same position relative to the loom as the fabric is advanced, either by an abutment 33 on the loom which is reciprocated or spring loaded to act on nose 34 of the needle so that the selvedge thread looped around the needle can pass, or by shaping the needle so that it is squeezed along the fabric by the loops 15 to compensate for the movement of the tape. The selvedge thread 11 may be of deformable material, for example nylon, or a thread coated wholly by deformable material or only in those parts which form the projecting loop heads. Alternatively, it may be a hollow tube of deformable material, which may be filled with a soft material or have a flattened rectangular cross section, or consist of a monofilament of a metal or metal alloy. In a further alternative, the thread 11 is a multifilament yarn. It may be marked in the locations which form the projecting loop heads.
