Abstract

1304908 Two part couplings INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP 30 July 1970 [16 Sept 1969] 36887/70 Heading H2E An electrical connector assembly 21a, 21b &c. comprises a plurality of discrete housings 23a, 23b &c. each containing one or more contacts 27, 28 and being detachably connected to a planar holder 22a, 22b &c. whereby the contacts can be simultaneously connected with terminal pins 17. The holder 22a, 22b &c. comprises a flat flexible plastics card with a series of parallel slots 38 while the housings 23 each comprise a plastics box-like structure with a tab 34 which engages in a slot 38 to connect the housing to the holder. The contacts 27, 28 are attached to cables 24 and the attached cable ends are embedded in a moulding non-conductive body 31 projecting from the housing 23, with retaining edges 32 of the contacts engaging the housing. An assembly 21 is mounted on a panel board 15 by manually gripping the holder 22 and positioning it so that the required terminal pin enters a hole 30 in a respective housing to engage the contact 28 and a ground rail 18 on the board enters a slot 29 in the housing to engage contact 27. An individual housing can be selectively disconnected and removed without dismounting the holder from the board by sliding the housing upwardly so that the tab 34 slides in the slot 38, and bending the holder and removing the tab through the wider medial portion 41 of the slot. The holders may be notched at 45 for providing a visual check of position when mounted on a panel board.
