Abstract
1303707 Furfuryl alcohol resins; foundry mould compositions ASHLAND OIL Inc 5 March 1970 [5 March 1969] 10700/70 Headings C3N and C3R The free formaldehyde content of furfuryl alcohol-formaldehyde prepolymers is reduced below 2% by heating them in the presence of metal ions. The prepolymer may be prepared from furfuryl alcohol, formaldehyde and optionally phenol in an inert solvent and in the presence of an acid catalyst. The acid catalyst is preferably neutralized before the next step. The metal ions may be provided by a zinc or lead compound, e.g. lead oxide. The prepolymer may be mixed with further furfuryl alcohol and used as a binder for foundry sand cores and moulds. In examples the following compounds are specified: formaldehyde sources: paraformaldehyde and trioxane; reaction solvents: toluene and xylene optionally containing acetic acid to dissolve paraformaldehyde; acid catalyst: ptoluene sulphonic acid; neutralizers for acid catalyst: potassium hydroxide and triethanolamine; and catalyst for cure of sand compositions: phosphoric acid.
