Abstract

1303055 Cooling reactors UNITED KING- DOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY 13 Aug 1970 [13 Aug 1969] 40424/69 Heading G6C In a sodium cooled, fast breeder reactor, the core and heat exchangers are mounted in a pool of sodium within a tank and the core coolant circuit is in communication with the coolant in the tank. The reactor core 6 is mounted in the tank, 1, beneath the sodium level, L, and is cooled by an upward sodium flow from the pumps 19, via the diagrid 5. Heated sodium leaves the upper surface of the core and enters the heat exchangers 17 through ducts 18. Coolant outflow from 17 is to the upper region of tank 1. A further leakage flow from the core outlet occurs between the rotatable shields 13, 14 and between the shield 13 and the support skirt 4 through the apertures 22, 23.
