Abstract

1,128,819. Cooling reactors. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. 5 Oct., 1966 [6 Oct., 1965 (2)], Nos. 42465/65 and 42466/65. Heading G6C. In a pressurized water-cooled and moderated reactor, pressure is maintained by vapour formed in the upper part of the pressure vessel by electric resistance heaters immersed in the coolant. To prevent corrosion currents in the reactor, the heaters are supplied from a threephase supply, the central-point of which is connected through a conductor to the metal sheathing of the heaters. Water is sprayed into the upper part of the vessel, i.e. the pressurizer, from a duct coupled to the coolant pump outlet. The core assemblies 11 are cooled by pressurized water urged upwards through the core by the pumps 20. The water flows from the plenum 25 downwards through the heat-exchangers 26 to the pump inlet duct 21. The upper portion 33, of the vessel 17, formed by the thermally insulated partition 31 serves as the pressurizer and is connected to the cooling water mass through the pipe 37. Pressurizing vapour is formed in the immersion heaters 41 and emerges into the space 33 through the openings 43.
