1300749 Centrifugal filter for gases HOCCOM DEVELOPMENTS Ltd 31 March 1970 [10 June 1969 14 Aug 1969] 29330/69 and 40597/69 Heading BIT A centrifugal filter for removing solid or liquid particles from gas comprises a drum 12 rotated by motor 20 in a cylindrical casing 2, gas passing from inlet 8a outwards through the drum to outlet 8b, coalesced liquid accumulating in a removable sump or being drained off by pipe 24, and drum 12 has a lining 15 of foamed polyurethane, acting as a filter-coalescer, and internal axial projections to induce rotation of incoming gas. As shown the projections comprise four circumferentially spaced vanes 14, and lining 15 is in four sections therebetween. Alternatively, axial ribs could be formed on or attached to a cylindrical lining 15, or drum 12 could have axial corrugations to which the lining conforms at least when the drum is rotating. The projections are of such size as to ensure maximum gas flow through the drum but not sufficient to cause inward flow through end gap 16. End wall 5 of the casing has spaced outlet holes (5a) leading to an annular outlet duct bridged by a filter element 18, of foamed polyurethane folded round metal mesh 18a, and a metal mesh screen 3. An annular baffle 5b and an axial baffle (25) (Fig. 2 not shown) direct coalesced liquid to outlet 24 and prevent its reaching the gas outlet. Fig. 1 shows the drum horizontally oriented, but Fig. 4 shows how the easing is modified for vertical or inclined mounting. The space between drum and casing is unequally divided by annular wall 2a, the gas flow 26 carrying coalesced liquid drops up the inside of the wall and over lip 2c after which liquid drains down space 21a shielded from gas flow.
