Abstract
1298859 Delivering sheets into a stack INGENIEURSBUREAU DE RIDDER NV 29 May 1970 [30 June 1969] 25907/70 Heading B8R In an apparatus for stacking sheets 5 of paper, e.g. supplied in an overlapping stream, means, e.g. lower and upper endless belts 3, 4 are provided for feeding the sheets to a stack forming means including a stop member 85, a sloping guide member 86, and lifting means including a star wheel 90 for lifting the leading edges of each sheet to a stack 96, the star wheel also serving to support the stack. The leading edge of each sheet engages the upwardly curved guide 86 and stop member 85 and is lifted by two star wheels 90 rotated via a free-wheel clutch, which facilitates adjustment, to the bottom of the stack 96, the trailing edge of each sheet being raised by teeth on the outside of belt 4 which project through a slot in a stack backplate 68 at a belt return pulley 64. The forming stack is thus supported on the teeth of belt 4 and by rollers on each of the projections on the rotating star wheels 90 and is located between side-plates 83 and the backing-plate 68. Adjustable auxiliary side-belts 30 adjacent to, but slanting downwardly of the belt 3, co-operate with belts 81 and rollers 79 at the sides of belt 4 to bend each sheet longitudinally to stiffen it. Belts 3 and 4 are each mounted on a frame 22, 42, respectively, which are longitudinally adjustable relative to each other so that the stack backing-plate 68 mounted on frame 42 can be adjusted for stacking sheets of different lengths. The top frame 42 can be pivoted about a shaft 53 and thus allows for feeding sheets of different thicknesses. When a predetermined number of sheets have been fed, a counter 41 activates a dog clutch causing struts 26, 27, 45, which support the frames 22, 42, to be pivoted about their shafts 28, 29 by an eccentric 37 and lever 36 so that the frames are moved forwards thereby urging the stack towards the tip (101), Fig. 2 (not shown), of a parting finger 98 pivotable about a shaft 100. The finger engages a guide track (110), Fig. 3 (not shown), on frame 22 which raises it into engagement with the bottom of the stack, an endless belt 102 on the finger then moving the stack on to removal belts 111, (124). The top of the forming stack may be engaged by a pressure roller 125 and as soon as frames 22, 42 move forward at the beginning of a stack removal cycle, an electromagnetic clutch 135 on a shaft 136 in a stationary machine frame clamps a plate 134 to a lever 152 so that tension applied by the moving frame member 156 to spring 157 is transmitted by lever 152 to a parallel motion linkage 137, 130, 133, 127 causing an endless belt 142 associated with roller 125 to press on to the top of the stack to aid its removal.
