Abstract

1297162 Pipe joints WMC TOWNS 21 Jan 1970 [29 Jan 1969] 5292/69 Heading F2G In a stuffing box joint the sealing ring 14b is compressed against an abutment 23 within the outer sleeve 12b by a collar 15b having an outwardly presented radial recess 17b, the collar being retained by deformation of part of the sleeve 19b in to said recess, a deformation 18b on the pipe 10b preventing axial withdrawal of the pipe. The abutment may be provided by the end of a removable sleeve (13) Fig. 1, 2 and 4 (not shown) inserted in aplain outer sleeve (12), and the groove (18) may be external (as shown) to abut either the sealing ring (14) or the collar (15), or may be inwardly recessed to be engaged by the sealing ring in its compressed state, Fig. 4 (not shown). Internal rebates may be provided in either sleeve (13) or collar (15) to accomodate the groove (18). The deformed parts (19) of the sleeve (12) may be dimpled or made as inwardly bendable U-shaped tongues. Sleeve 12 may be the end of a T-piece or elbow or other connecting piece, or may be the end of a larger diameter pipe than pipe 10b. Pipes of different diameters may be joined by using a sleeve large enough to aocomodate the largest pipe and appropriately sized collars. Alternatively a sleeve with ends of different diameters can be used.
