Abstract

1296840 Bonded fibre fabric KIMBERLY-CLARK CORP 16 Dec 1969 [16 Dec 1968] 61277/69 Headings D1R and D1S A web of random-laid wood-pulp fibres having a basis weight of 5 to 50 1bs per 2880 sq. ft. has a series of compacted fibre-bonded areas which are spaced apart across both dimensions of the web by a distance which is less than the average length of the fibres, the thickness of the relatively uncompacted areas of the web being at least 2.5 times the thickness of the bonded areas. Preferably the fibres are less than 0.5 inches in length. Preferably an air laid batt 30 of 1-5 mm wood pulp fibres, is sprayed with water at 36, lightly calendered, sprayed a second time with water and embossed between a steel roll 46 bearing e.g. a diamond pattern and a resilient nylon roll 44. A pattern of compressed areas, 15 to 35 per linear inch, comprising 5-40% of the web, is produced. Hydrogen bonding is brought about in these areas by the pressure, which also reduces their thickness to 40% or 20%, or less of the less compressed portions. Aqueous solutions of urea formaldehyde,. melamine formaldehyde, polyamine or polyimine may be sprayed onto the batt before or after embossing, or may be applied to embossing roller 46 via pick-up and transfer rollers (Fig. 8, not shown). The web may be sprayed with starch at 42 or 58 to prevent linting. A batch process for air-laying the web is described (Fig. 4, not shown). Testing fabrics. The real sheet density of the fabric, i.e. its weight divided by the volume enclosed between the opposite (contoured) surfaces of the web may be determined in 2 ways. In one a weighed sample is saturated with a low viscosity mineral oil, repeatedly laid on a polyethylene sheet to remove excess oil, and reweighed. Alternatively a sample is embedded in resin, microtomed along the machine direction to form 80 sections. The sheet outlines in these sections is planimetered, the area summed and multiplied by the section thickness to give the sample volume.
