Abstract

1296162 Hip-joint socket CHAS F THACKRAY Ltd 18 Jan 1972 [3 March 1971] 5891/71 Heading ASR An acetabular socket has an inner surface 9 in the shape of a hemisphere extended by a part-cylindrical section of radius equal to the radius of the hemisphere, a first circumferential part of the part-cylindrical section having a greater axial length d 1 than that, d 2 , of a second circumferential part thereof. The first part subtends an angle (# 1 + # 3 + # 4 ), Fig. 3 (not shown) of between 90‹ and 180‹, preferably 120‹, at the axis of the socket. The first part terminates in an arcuate edge having a central section 14 lying in a first plane perpendicular to the axis of the socket, and two end sections 15, (16), Fig. 3 (not shown) inclined at an acute angle to this plane. The second part terminates in an arcuate edge 13 lying in a second perpendicular plane and extending from the ends of the end edge sections 15, (16). The distance between the first and second perpendicular planes is between 2 and 10 mm, preferably 3.5 mm. The angle (# 3 ), (# 4 ) subtended by each end edge section 15, (16) at the axis of the socket is preferably 20‹. The end face 12 of the socket has a first part 17 extending radially outward from the central edge section 14 and lying in the first perpendicular plane, and a second part 18 extending radially outward from the edge 13 and inclined at an acute angle # 5 , preferably 70‹, to the axis of the socket, with triangular connecting sections (19), (20), Fig. 3 (not shown). The socket has a flange 7 with serrations 8, and has external grooves 2-(6), Fig. 2 (not shown). The socket is made from dense plastics material.
