Abstract

1295988 Making camshafts; welding by pressure RUBERY OWEN-ROCKWELL Ltd 14 May 1971 23558/70 Headings B3A and B3R A brake camshaft is made by friction welding a cam on to the end of a shaft. The cam is made by stamping, casting, forging or extruding and has an axial boss on one side, which tapers down to a diameter substantially equal to that of the shaft. The end faces of the boss and shaft are prepared by machining and the cam and shaft are mounted in a friction welding machine. Either one or both members are rotated and when welding temperature is reached, end pressure is applied until the parts cool.
