Abstract

1294619 Refining metals; lead AEG ELOTHERM GmbH 12 May 1971 [5 June 1970] 14476/71 Heading C7D A substance is removed from a molten metal, the substance having a decreasing solubility in the cooling metal, by conveying the metal from a melting or holding vessel up a refractory trough by means of a travelling electromagnetic field and controlling the temperature gradient so that the substance separates along the trough. Copper may be removed from lead in this manner, the copper forming a dross on the surface of the lead. Silver may also be removed from lead by adding zinc, whereby part of the zinc containing silver is precipitated and lead-zinc alloy is produced, from which zinc may be distilled.
