Abstract

1292471 Tubular heat exchangers LINDE AG 12 June 1970 [14 June 1969] 28474/70 Heading F4S A condenser-evaporator arranged within a cylindrical rectification column 1 comprises a plurality of spaced apart rows of parallel tubular passages 2 formed by pairs of cooperating sheet panels 3, 4 each having semicylindrical corrugations therein. The passages of adjacent rows are arranged in staggered relationship with respect to each other. In operation liquid oxygen from a plate or bubble cap 30 flows downwardly through two mutually opposite cylindrical segments 12 and 13 to the bottom of the tubular passages 2 and then upwardly through the passages 2. Gaseous nitrogen flows upwardly into annular spaces 17 and 18 from whence it flows laterally through the interspaces 19 between adjacent pairs of tube sheet panels and is condensed by the liquid oxygen. Uncondensed helium is removed from the nitrogen by way of discharge connections 23, 24 located above a horizontal partition wall 28 which has a central elongate aperture 35 therein. The condensate is removed from the bottom of the interspaces 19, see arrows 34, to the part of the column below the condenserevaporator. The oxygen leaves the top of the tubular passages 2 in gaseous form, sec arrows 32, and flows through the plate or cap 30 into the part of the column above the latter. The sheet panels 3, 4 are provided on their condensing surfaces with fin arrangements (see Figs. 4-6, not shown) to break up condensate film. One or more oblique collecting fins may be disposed below banks of closely spaced vertical fins to guide the condensate to a collecting channel(s) at the side(s) of each panel (see Figs. 4 and 5). In another form (Fig. 6) the condensate collecting fins may have several oblique sections (45, 46) with condensate drip spouts (47) projecting into the interspaces: a perforated condensate discharge sheet of synthetic resin connects all the drip spouts. The fins and drip spouts may be pressed in the sheet panels 3, 4 or may comprise separate sheet structures attached to the. panels e.g. by dip soldering.
