Abstract

1292256 Collapsible steering columns FORD MOTOR CO Ltd 5 Aug 1971 36803/71 Heading B7H In an energy absorbing steering column interengaging formations on the steering column and a bracket fixed to the vehicle body are disengageable upon downward movement of the upper end of the steering column after which the bracket no longer supports the steering column. In a preferred embodiment tapered projections 15 engage respective tapered sockets 15 of the bracket 13, the projections being fixed to bolts 18 for axial adjustment in threaded sockets 17 fixed to the steering column. Downward movement of the steering column is normally prevented by the lowest corrugation 22 of column 11 engaging the vehicle floor aperture 20. In an alternative arrangement the projections are fixed and a thrust-ring 24 raises the column to interengage respective projections and sockets as bolts 25 are tightened.
