1290713 Light guides NIPPON SELFOC K K 10 Aug 1969 [10 Aug 1968, 21 Aug 1968(4), 26 Sept 1968 and 1 Oct 1968(2)) 38648/69 Heading G2J An image transmitting system comprises a lens element positioned at one end of an optical fibre bundle, the lens element having an axis of optical symmetry and a refractive index variation in planes transverse to the axis in accordance with the equation n = N (1-ar<SP>2</SP>) where N is the value of the index at the axis, n the value at a radial distance r, and a a positive or negative constant. In Fig. 5, a lens element 7 images an object P at Q at the input end of a spaced fibre bundle 8, but in Fig. 6 (not shown) the length of the lens element (9) is such as to allow the image to be formed at the end of the element, i.e. the element and the fibre bundle (10) are operated in contact. The lens element body may be curved, as in Fig. 9 (not shown), and the curvature may vary, as in Fig. 20(B) (not shown). In Fig. 27, an element 35 acts as the objective of a microscope a bundle of fibres 37 conveying light to an eyepiece 40; in this embodiment a further, curved, objective lens element 36 is operated in parallel, thereby giving a wide angle view. The values of N and a, and the actual cross-section of the element itself, may vary, as in Figs. 12, 13, 21 (not shown).
