1290604 Packing system for containers E LENGTHORN 7 Sept 1971 [8 Sept 1970 8 June 1971] 42924/70 and 19338/71 Heading B8C In a packing and stacking system for bottles 1 each having, on its upper face, a male joint member comprising a truncated pyramidic portion 6 surmounted by a neck 7 with a conventional crown cap 8 and, in its lower face, a female joint member consisting of a recess 9 defined by truncated pyramidic and cylindrical recesses 10, 11 respectively, the male and female joints are dimensioned to interengage, as shown in Fig. 5, when the bottles are stacked in layers, the lowermost layer being supported upon a base-plate 12 which is provided with circular holes 14 which correspond with the male joints and which are surrounded by part. pyramidic lips 14a which fit snugly into corresponding recesses 10 in the bottles 1. Pips 4 in the upper face of one bottle are adapted to fit into corresponding recesses 5 in the base of a superposed bottle. A pack of bottles may have a similarly shaped top plate 13 part pyramidic recesses 14b around the lower ends of the holes 14 receiving the corresponding truncated pyramidic portions 6 of the male members of the bottles. The plates 12, 13 can be secured together by straps, string, or tape &c. Fig. 4 shows a pack in four layers of twenty-five bottles, apertured membranes of paper, or plastics, preferably being located between each layer. The plates 12, 13 are secured together by bifurcated side members 15 the ends of the legs of which are curled around to form lips 16 to engage corresponding ridges 18 in the lower face of the bottom plate 12 at each side of a recess 19, the upper edge of the member having a resilient tongue 17 which engages in a slot 19 between a similar pair of ridges in the upper plate 13. The plates 15 can be removed by depressing the tongues 17 and removing them from the slots 19, and they could be used on each side of the pack and be made wider to protect all of the sides of the pack. The plates 12, 13 can be compactly secured together by the side plates for return to the supplier. In the case of a large pack having an even number of layers a carrying plate may be located in the middle of the pack, the carrying plate being provided with a suitcase type of handle. In a modification, Fig. 8, not shown, a handled tray (20) is provided with side walls which are high, or short, according to the support necessary for the bottles. The top plate 13 can be replaced by a heat shrunk plastics foil. The shape of the bottles may vary, for instance the top and bottom surfaces 2, 3 could slope with respect to the side walls.
