1289349 Polymerisation apparatus; screw mixers POLYMER CORP 2 Sept 1969 [3 Sept 1968] 43472/69 Headings B1C and B1X [Also in Division C3] In apparatus for continuous lactam polymerization (Fig. 6), monomer storage vessel 8 contains lactam + initiator and vessel 9 contains lactam + catalyst. Pumps 12 and 14 are preferably positive displacement pumps, e.g. gear pumps, both pumping and metering the monomer. Heat exchangers 18 surround the reactor. Tc are temperature-sensing means. The screw flights in mixing zone A are such as to induce turbulence and thorough mixing; in zones B and C they are such as to ensure uniform advance of the mixture with minimum shear. The screws rotate in the same sense and mate very closely, allowing no accumulation of mixture within the flights.
