Abstract
1,267,077. Polymerisation apparatus; mixing apparatus. SOC. RHODIACETA. 23 May, 1969 [27 May, 1968], No. 26593/69. Headings B1C and B1X. [Also in Division C3] Apparatus suitable for continuously carrying out reactions in which the viscosity of the reaction mixture changes as the reaction proceeds and in which the reaction mixture and product are in the liquid phase, e.g. polycondensation, comprises a hollow shell reactor 1 with degassing orifices 4 through with the reaction mixture is continually passed from inlet 2 to outlet 3. The reactor has a substantially horizontal axis 6 about which a stirring system 7 rotates, the stirring system consisting of at least one series A, B, C or D of flat circular sector stirring plates 8 normal to the axis spaced from one another both linearly along and angularly around the axis, the plates being arranged in sets of one or more plates in each plane normal to the axisthe linear spacing and angular spacing of the plates being inter-related and related to the average viscosity and average density of the reaction medium at a designated point. The stirring system preferably comprises several stirring series A, B, C and D in each of which the distance between plates increases and the angular spacing remains constant, this latter increasing from one series to the next. The stirring system has a coefficient of obstruction which vanes from one end of the stirring system to the other, being 0.1-0.5 at the feed end and 0.01-0.1 at the outlet end. A speed of rotation of between 1 and 10 rev./minute is generally used and scraper strips 9 may be fitted to the circumference of the plates.
