Abstract

1289136 Moulding fibre-resin articles SUMITOMO ELECTRIC INDUSTRIES Ltd 28 Nov 1969 58392/69 Heading B5A Elongated fibre-resin articles are made by drawing a fibrous reinforcement having a predetermined number of relatively slack fibres through a resin impregnation chamber and then through a heated die. The slack fibres, since they contain regions oriented in the transverse direction, lend to the finished article considerable strength in the transverse as well as the longitudi - nal direction. In the particular embodiment, the reinforcement is drawn through a resilient inlet 5 into an impregnation chamber 4 through which resin is fed via injection port 8 and discharge port 10 and from which air is exhausted through port 9. The exhaustion of air facilitates complete penetration of the resin into the reinforcement and eliminates bubbles in the finished article. The impregnated reinforcement then passes through the heated tapered outlet 7 into a heated die 13 where solidification of the resin occurs. The resin may be a polyester, an epoxy, a phenolic or a diaryl phthalate prepolymer and the fibres of the reinforcement may be glass, a carbonized material, a polyamide, a polyester, a polyvinylalcohol or jute.
