Abstract

1288332 Transformer protective circuits WESTINGHOUSE BRAKE & SIGNAL CO Ltd 6 Jan 1971 [19 Jan 1970] 2574/70 Heading H2H A transformer protection circuit, Fig. 1, comprises a transformer 4, the primary input of which is controlled at 5 by two S.C.R. devices in anti-parallel connection, gating pulses being applied by a generator 6 controlled at 8 by the source input 1, 2 and at 7 by a D.C. input, whereby the firing angle may be varied with respect to the phase of the A.C., the output of the transformer being rectified at 10 and filtered at 11 to power load 12, and in addition the output at 11 is applied at 21, 22, Fig. 2, filtered at 23, 25 and applied via a Zener diode 26 to the base of a transistor 28 via a potential divider 27. In normal operation the voltage across terminals 21, 22 is insufficient to break down the diode 26, however, in the event of open circuit at the transformer output, the voltage will rise greatly and a proportion will be applied to the base of the transistor 28 to form a conducting path to short out the D.C. input at 7, the circuits 6 thereby being caused to apply triggering pulses at firing angles retarded by at least #/2 with respect to the A.C. supply, the triggering of an S.C.R. thereby not taking place until after the other has ceased to conduct, owing to the phase difference between current and voltage in the primary circuit; the transformer is these conditions forming a substantially inductive load. The circuits may be adapted for polyphase operation.
