Abstract

1288077 Moulding fuel element NUKEN NUKLEAR-CHEMIE UND METALLURGIE GmbH 16 Dec 1969 [22 Jan 1969] 61131/69 Heading B5A [Also in Division G6] A nuclear fuel element is made from a mix of coated nuclear fuel particles and a moulding powder consisting of natural graphite and/or graphitized petroleum coke and a binder, e.g. a phenol resin, in a rubber mould having a prismatic cavity closed by a rubber cover at its upper and lower ends. The upper cover is provided with holes through which sticks of rubber or metal are inserted for forming cooling ducts in the fuel element. The sticks run parallel to the longitudinal axis of the prism and are inserted into corresponding recesses in the lower cover. The mix is moulded isostatically in liquid at a pressure of 0À1 t./cm.<SP>2</SP>. The sticks are then replaced by slightly thinner sticks and the resulting gaps filled with moulding powder. The surface of the prism is covered with the same powder and the mix moulded to completion at a pressure of 2 to 3 t./cm.<SP>2</SP> to produce a block element with homogeneously distributed fuel particles surrounded by a fuel-free layer.
