Abstract

PURPOSE:To improve the surface hardness of castings by mixing a prescribed amt. of cerium powder with boron carbide powder, a phenolic resin and alcohol and coating the mixed materials on the inside surface of molds. CONSTITUTION:A titled hardening material consisting of 100pts.wt boron carbide powder, and 0.1-25pts.wt. phenolic resin, alcohol and cerium powder. This material is coated on the inside surface of a mold 1 whereby a hardened layer 2 is provided. Molten metal is charged into a mold cavity 3 and a casting 4 formed with the hardened layer 5 which is hard only at the surface in contact with the layer 2 is cast.
