Abstract

1287444 Anti-oxidant ESSO RESEARCH & ENG CO 6 Jan 1970 [6 June 1969] 28836/69 Heading C5F An anti-oxidant mixture for mineral or synthetic oils comprises a phenolic compound e.g. α or # naphthol, dihydroxy naphthalene, 4À4<SP>1</SP>-methylene bis-2,6-di-t-butyl phenol and a borate of formula wherein R 1 and R 2 are alkyl or arylkyl groups, R 3 and R 4 are tertiary hydrocarbyl groups and R 5 is H, alkyl, aryl, substituted alkyl, substituted aryl, amino, substituted amino, halogen, alkoxy or aryloxy. Molar ratio of borate to phenolic compound is between 1 : 3 and 3 : 1. Anti-oxidant power is increased by adding 2À5-20 wt. per cent based on combined phenolic and borate compounds of 5 or 6 membered heterocyclic ring compounds containing hetero N or hetero N and S atoms. Examples of conventional fatty and synthetic oils and standard optional additive are given.
