Abstract

1286929 Producing tetracycline ISTITUTO BIOCHIMICO ITALIANO DI LOREDANA LORENZINI SaS 30 June 1971 [17 April 1971] 30583/71 Heading C2A Tetracycline is produced by cultivating Strepto - myces phenaethylicus n. sp. (IMRU. 3948) under submerged aerobic conditions in an aqueous nutrient medium containing assimilable sources of carbon, nitrogen and inorganic salts. The micro-organism is a mutant of Streptomyces aureofaciens ATCC. 10762 obtained by treating the latter with phenethyl alcohol together with nitrosoguanidine, dimethyl sulphate or nitrosomethyl-urethane. The fermentation is preferably conducted at an initial pH of 5À8 to 6À7 and a temperature of 26‹ to 32‹ C. Tetracycline is recovered from the filtered broth as the free base or a salt thereof by conventional methods.
