Abstract

128,669. Calthrop, E. R. Aug. 30, 1917. Addition to 117,092. Parachutes. - Means for increasing or decreasing the amount of opening of a parachute, so as to vary the speed of descent, comprise a series of cords 4, Figs, 1 and 2, passed through groups of eyelets 1 at the mouth of the parachute and connected at their ends to cords 6 attached to a cord 8 leading to the pilot. In a modification, the cords 4 are connected to slip-rings adapted to be drawn together by a pull on the pilot's cord. The cord 8 may be connected to one end, and the suspension cord 18 to the other end, of a frame 20, Fig. 6, provided with a carriage 23 connected to the main suspension cord 18<1> so that by moving the carriage to one end or the other of the frame 20, the pilot may bring 'his weight to bear on either of the cords 8, 18. The carriage 23 is actuated by means of a handle 24 and rack-and-pinion gear 21, 22. The actuation of the parachute may be effected bv clock-work or other automatic mechanism, and the cords may be wound upon a drum or other means.
