Abstract
1286444 Welding by fusion SULZER BROS Ltd 29 Jan 1970 [29 Jan 1969] 4334/70 Heading B3R [Also in Divisions H3-H5] A workpiece 1 is plated by striking an arc 4 between a meltable metal strip 2 and the workpiece 1, moving the workpiece 1 transversely to the strip 2, and causing the arc to travel back and forth along the strip by supplying pulsating current to a flat magnetic coil 10 arranged with the long straight portions of its turns parallel to the edge of the strip. As shown, the coil 10 has a flat magnetic core arranged at 30 degrees to the workpiece 1. The strip 2 is fed to the workpiece by rollers 21 and its lower end is enclosed in a bath of welding flux 6 which forms a slag layer 8 on the plating layer 7 and a covering layer 9 of unmelted flux. The coil waveform may be sinusoidal or sawtooth and the frequency and peak values may be varied. In Fig. 4 (not shown), the coil is replaced by a flat coil whose longitudinal axis is parallel to the strip 2 and whose core has a polepiece bent towards the end of the strip. The other polepiece may also be bent towards the strip. Oppositely poled cored coils may be provided on opposite sides of the strip. Inert gas may be fed to the melting edge instead of welding flux.
