Abstract

1286152 Tubular furnaces COURTAULDS Ltd 8 Jan 1970 [9 Jan 1969] 1290/69 Heading F4B Carbon filaments 4 are graphitized whilst passing through an electrically heated carbon or graphite furnace tube 1 provided at each end of its hot zone 2 with flexible carbon or graphite radiation shields 6, 6<SP>1</SP> through which the filaments pass. The shields 6, 6<SP>1</SP> are resiliently deformable in the direction of movement A of the filaments, and are made from woven carbon fabric, carbon felt, or an annular bundle of staple carbon or graphite fibres, the fibres being aligned in a direction perpendicular to the movement of the filaments. Retaining plates 7, 7<SP>1</SP> , 8, 8<SP>1</SP> for the shields are provided.
