Abstract

1285922 Casting machines BUHLER AG GEB 29 Sept 1968 [30 Sept 1968] 47068/69 Heading B3F [Also in Division F1] An hydraulic drive piston 62, Fig. 2, having a rod 63 for actuating a plunger 11, Fig. 1, which forces molten metal from a sleeve 10 into closed mould halves 8, 9 is supplied by a pump 31 through a valve 32 when in its left hand position and also by an accumulator 16 through an axial valved bore 66 in a stepped intensifier piston 65 which during the forward stroke of piston 62 is held in the retracted position shown by fluid trapped in the left hand end of cylinder 13 and held by a closed overflow valve 80 connected by a duct 42 to a return tank 30 until such time that when the drive piston 62 meets resistance the resulting back pressure rise at the large end of piston 65 and which acts through a restrictor 90 and after depressing a differential floating piston 96 opens a shut-off valve 85 thereby venting a line 82 between valves 82, 85 resulting in venting of the left hand side of piston 65 and displacement of piston 65 so as to intensify the pressure on the drive piston 62 which in turn pressurizes the casting. The lower end of floating piston 96 is subject to accumulator pressure, and restrictor 90 together with an adjutstable stop 98 for piston 96 serves to provide an adjustable time delay between the moment the drive piston meets resistance and the moment of application thereto of intensified forward pressure. In a modification the shut-off valve (115), Fig. 4 (not shown), is solenoid operated and the delay is effected by a time switch (146).
