Abstract

1285833 Jointing by stamping VAN LEER (UK) Ltd 26 Jan 1970 3580/70 Heading B3Q [Also in Division B8] A sheet metal end closure, comprising a central flat portion 8, a radially-corrugated frustoconical portion 9 and a cylindrical rim 5 having a down-turned edge 6, is permanently secured to a sheet-metal container body 1, having an enlarged cylindrical rim 2 joined to the main body of the container by a frusto-conical shoulder 4, by seating the end closure on the shoulder and applying downward pressure on the closure central flat portion until the central flat portion is slightly below the horizontal plane through the lower edge of the container body rim. The rims 2 and 5 are deformed to frusto-conical shape by the radial expansion of the closure, Fig. 7 (not shown). A sealing ring 7 is provided in the channel defined by the down-turned edge 6. Additionally or alternatively, a band having glue layers on opposite sides may be disposed between the rims 2 and 5, Fig. 9 (not shown). The cylindrical surfaces of the rims 2 and 5 may be initially roughened by sand-blasting and the flat portion may be provided a closable opening. In a modification, Fig. 8 (not shown), the central flat portion of the closure is recessed to define a clearly defined contact surface for a pressing tool.
