Abstract

1284658 Linear polyesters GOODYEAR TIRE & RUBBER CO 6 April 1970 [2 May 1969] 16191/70 Heading C3R Linear polyesters are prepared by reacting together with the removal of water a free dicarboxylic acid and a glycol of the series where n is an integer from 1 to 10, dissolved in a quantity of low molecular weight linear polyester, in the presence of a catalyst selected from organic carboxylic acid salts of titanium or zirconium, beta-diketonates of titanium or zirconium and alcoholates of titanium or zirconium to produce a condensation product of the acid and the glycol, and polymerizing the condensation product in the presence of a polymerization catalyst, the low molecular weight linear polyester having the general formula wherein H is hydrogen, G is the glycol, A is the acid and n is from 1À4 to 20. Additional catalysts which may be used are oxides and silicates of alkali metals and alkaline earth metals, alkali metal and alkaline earth metal salts of carboxylic acids, and organic oxides of alkali metals and alkaline earth metals. Organo phosphorous compounds may be added to the reaction mixture. The process may be continuous. In the examples the titanium and zirconium compounds are used as catalysts in the preparation of polyethylene terephthalate.
