Abstract

1402610 Preparing polyethers BAYER AG 22 Dec 1972 [23 Dec 1971] 59476/72 Heading C3R A polyether which contains carboxylic acid ester groups and which is free from aromatic radicals is prepared by heating to above 120‹ C. in the presence of an etherification catalyst a polyhydroxyl compound of the formula wherein R is a divalent C 2-18 aliphatic radical, a C 4-14 cycloaliphatic radical or a divalent radical of a polyester of molecular weight 100-10,000 which radical, which is free from aromatic radicals has been obtained by the removal of terminal carboxylic acid groups or carboxylic acid ester groups, R<SP>1</SP> is hydrogen or a C 1-6 alkyl radical and n is 1 or 2. Preferred polyhydroxyl compounds are Preferred catalysts are sulphonic acid and organic sulphonic acids, e.g. benzene sulphonic acid. The polyhydroxyl compounds used as starting materials in the examples are (a) a polyester of ethylene glycol and adipic acid, (b) a polyester of 1,2-propylene glycol and adipic acid, (c) an ester of adipic acid and diethylene glycol and (d) the reaction product of ethylene oxide and polyesters derived from (i) ethylene glycol and adipic acid, (ii) neopentyl glycol and adipic acid and (iii) 1,6-hexanediol and adipic acid.
