Abstract
1284642 Heat exchange elements; hot water boilers; burners GLOW-WORM Ltd 22 Dec 1970 912/70 Headings F4A F4S and F4T A heat exchanger intended for use in a gasfired water heater comprises a one-piece casting providing a central cavity 16 encircled by a ring of parallel tubular conduits 14 which pass through transverse spaced-apart fin plates 10. In use the conduits 14 may extend either vertically or horizontally. In the water heater shown the heat exchanger is mounted in a casing 50. Water to be heated passed through the conduits 14 (some e.g. two of these serving for the flow and the remainder for the return) and gases from a burner 28 mounted in the central cavity 16 of the heat exchanger, first pass radially outwardly across the lower group of the fins 10 and then flow radially inwardly across the upper group of the fins 10 to the cavity 16 and thence to a flue 54. Alternatively the gas may flow radially outwardly across the fins and thence directly to the flue. The burner 28 is cylindrical with a porous wall of fine mesh, and is ignited by a spark at electrode 40 earthing on to the burner and switching on the combustion air fan 34 or fuel supply valve (42, Fig. 1), fuel being drawn into the air stream at 36. Governors (44, Fig. 1) restrict the flow of gas until the fan has reached operational speed. A flame failure device (46, Fig. 1) is provided. Fig. 5 shows a modification in which the outer casing is double walled and forms the burner. An air-gas mixture passes into space 68 formed by the double walls and combustion takes place on the surface of wall 58 which is porous and is lined with a mat 70 of ceramic fibre. The combustion takes the form of a mas of small points of flame on the surface of the wall 58 so that the whole surface appears incandescent. The burner gases flow across the fins of the heat exchanger 10, 14 into the central cavity 16 where they are diverted by a baffle 72 towards the flue 54.
