Abstract

1284368 Printing systems INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP 19 June 1970 [3 July 1969] 29785/70 Heading G4H In a printing system where the text to be printed is held on a tape, to divide the text into lines of lengths within a narrow range, a running count is kept in a counter 2 of the space occupied on a line by characters and spaces and each time a space is encountered a signal 3 causes a comparator 8 to compare the count with the maximum width of the line held in a unit 22. If the count is equal to or less than the maximum the count is transferred into a counter 12. When the maximum is exceeded the count at the next previous space, that is the count in counter 12, is compared in a comparator 17 with the difference between the maximum width and a right hand narrow zone, so defining a minimum length of line, held in unit 21. If the count is greater than or equal to this difference the next previous space occurs in the zone so a carriage return signal is generated on line 18. If the count is less than the difference the space is before the zone and the last word spans the zone, so requiring a hyphen decision by the operator which is signalled to him on line 19. The maximum width and the zone width, which is held in unit 23, can be varied by the operator.
