Abstract

1282558 Selective printing DEFENCE SECRETARY OF STATE FOR 27 Oct 1969 [11 Sept 1968] 43113/68 Heading B6F A typewriter has key operated means for rotating its platen backward or forward for printing superscripts (such as powers) and subscripts, the key also producing an output for inclusion in a punched tape, punched card, magnetic tape or like computer programming means, so that the significance of a digit typed can be distinguished by the computer according to the level at which it is printed with respect to the line of type. The platen rotating means may comprise a solenoid S3 acting on a spring- biased plunger 12 to which a pawl P3 is pivoted, the pawl P3 being urged towards a ratchet wheel R3 on the platen shaft, but prevented from engaging the ratchet wheel by a pin 16 engaging a cam surface 22 whereby when the solenoid is operated the pawl is allowed to engage the ratchet wheel. Two platen rotating means are provided for rotation in opposite senses.
