Abstract

1282300 Impact wrenches DESOUTTER BROS Ltd 1 Dec 1970 [8 Dec 1969] 59836/69 Heading B3N A pneumatically operated hand-held impact wrench or screwdriver comprises a hammer member 17 having hammers 19 engaging anvils 20 on a driven member 21, the hammer member being spring 18 loaded, and the spring loading being adjustable by a key 58 turning an internally threaded ring 52; at a predetermined maximum torque the hammer member can operate a valve 23 by engaging a pin 23a, the effect of opening valve 23 depends whether valve 25 or valve 26 is being operated. When valve 26 is depressed air passes through valve 33 down annular space 47 to passageway 34 and thence via valve 26b to inlet ports of motor 3 to drive spindle 16 clockwise. When the predetermined torque is reached and valve 23 is operated air pressure in chamber 44 is vented to atmosphere via a silencer 14 causing valve 33 to be closed and thus stopping the motor. If valve 25 is operated to produce counter clockwise rotation then operation of valve 23 does not effect closure of valve 33 as air passes from passageway 34 along passage 19 to maintain valve 33 open so that during removing a fastener there is no automatic cut-off.
