Abstract
1,263,238. Torque wrenches and screwdrivers. GARDNER-DENVER CO. 11 May, 1970 [28 Nov., 1969], No. 22696/70. Heading B3N. A power torque tool has an air motor 14, a rod 112 actuating a shut-off valve 32 for the motor 14 and a torque sensing, rotation transmitting means 70 including driving and driven members 72, 80 which are adapted to move relatively to each other upon sensing a predetermined torque and gripping means (balls 108) operable to grip rod 112 but to release it at the predetermined torque. The pressure fluid motor 14 drives the driving member 72 through an epicyclic gearing 24. Member 72 drives member 80 which in turn drives a spindle 54 by balls 84. The operation of the gripping balls 108 are urged to friction grip rod 12 by a conical surface 106 formed on member 80. In operation, downward pressure on the tool will move bit 56, spindle 54 and torque sensing means 70 axially toward motor 14 against a spring 116. The balls 108 are forced to grip member 112 and move it axially to operate valve closure member 36 to open valve 32 thus starting the motor. The closure member is biased shut by fluid pressure in supply passage 30. The interengaging driving surfaces between members 72 and 80 are sloped and urged into contact by spring 102, limited axial movement being allowed so that as a predetermined torque is reached member 80 is forced away from member 72 whereby the gripping force of balls 108 is released and valve closure member 36 is forced by fluid pressure to shut the valve. Spring 116 repositions torque sensing means 70 to the position shown in Fig. 1. In a modification a manually controlled throttle valve is positioned up-stream of valve 32 which in this case is spring-biased open. After release of actuating member 112 to close valve 32 and shut off the motor, the throttle valve is released and vents pressure fluid from upstream of the shut-off valve which is thus opened by the spring pressure. An electric motor may be utilized whereby actuating member 112 operates a spring-biased switch to cut-off motive energy to the motor.
