Abstract

1282171 Bonded asbestos fabrics; lap forming apparatus TAC CONSTRUCTION MATERIALS Ltd 14 July 1970 [23 June 1969] 31651/69 Headings D1N and D1R A resin solution and asbestos fibres are sprayed simultaneously on to a backing sheet to form a mat. Small quantities of asbestos fibres are repeatedly added to hopper 22. Spiked creeper roll 24 conveys a constant quantity of fibres to where stripper roller 33 detaches them from roll 24 so that they fall into the inlet 34 of impeller 35. (Plate 27 and brush 28 remove excess fibres before they can reach the impeller). The fibres are blown by compressed air along tube 3 to the outlet of spray gun 1. Co-axially surrounding tube 2 is spray head 6, equipped with nozzles 7 which are angled slightly inwards towards the axis of tube 2, so that the streams of resin solution which they deliver mix with and impregnate the fibres before they impinge at an angle of 60‹ upon a hessian or wire mesh backing sheet (37, Figs. 4, 5, not shown). The spray gun is mounted on a carriage (36) which is moved transversely of sheet (37) by chain drive (38). Limit switches (39) halt the carriage at the extremity of its travel, move the backing sheet (37) a step forward and reverse the motion of the carriage. Alternatively the carriage may contain several spray guns, and the backing sheet may be moved continuously. Preferably a number of passes are made to build up the mat. The mat is rolled to consolidate and smooth it, removed from the backing sheet, then dried and precured in an air oven at 100‹C. The resin may be a polyester, silicone phenol formaldehyde or, cresol formaldehyde, but is preferably a 10 to 60% aqueous solution of a phenolic resin. Graphite or silicate fillers may be incorporated by mixing with the asbetos fibres.
