Abstract

1282017 Electro-photographic developer MINNESOTA MINING & MFG CO 21 July 1969 [22 July 1968] 36599/69 Heading G2H Developer powder for use in the electrophotographic process of French Patent Specification 1456993 (in which an exposed photo-conductive sheet is contacted with developer powder adhered to a conductive surface while applying an electric field) comprises thermoplastic, essentially spherical particles, the thermoplastic material of which having a conductivity of at most 10<SP>-12</SP> mho cm<SP>-1</SP>, in which are essentially completely embedded electrically conductive particles forming a radially disposed zone. The spherical particles have (a) a volume conductivity which increases monotonically from between 10<SP>-11</SP> and 10<SP>-4</SP> (at 100 V cm<SP>-1</SP> D.C.) to between 10<SP>-8</SP> and 10<SP>-3</SP> mho cm<SP>-1</SP> (at 10, 000 V cm<SP>-1</SP> D.C.), (b) a number average particle size below 15 Á, and contain 0À01-4 vol % of said conductive particles. The conductive particles have a conductivity of at least 10<SP>-2</SP> mho/cm and an average diameter below 100 mÁ. The examples describe powders in which the thermoplastic is an epoxy resin and the conductive powder is carbon (embedded in the resin by impact) and which also contains magnetite, benzidine yellow or nickel zinc ferrite; the powder may be mixed with silica to improve flowability.
