Abstract

1281956 Stabilizing polyolefins FARBWERKE HOECHST AG 10 July 1970 [10 July 1969] 33663/70 Heading C3P Moulding compositions comprise (1) a polyolefin and (2) a stabilizer therefor comprising (a) 0À02 to 2 weight per cent of RSnR where R is C 8-20 alkyl and n is 2, 3 or 4, (b) 0À02 to 2 weight per cent of R 1 SR 1 where R 1 is C 8-20 alkyl or -(CH 2 ) m COOR where m is 2 or 3, (c) 0À02 to 2 weight per cent of a phenolic antioxidant and (d) 0 to 2 weight per cent of calcium stearate. Specified polyolefins are polyethylene, polypropylene, polybutene-1 and poly-4-methyl pentene-1. Specified components (a) are dioctyl didodecyl and dioctadecyl disulphides, dioctadecyl trisulphide and dioctadecyl tetrasulphide; (b) dioctadecyl sulphide and dialkyl thiodipropionates; and (c) diphenol alkanoic acid esters and amides. The compositions may also contain conventional lubricants, pigments, antistatic agents and stabilizers. Examples describe the stabilizing polypropylene with calcium stearate, dioctadecyl disulphide, dioctadecyl sulphide and (1 and 2) bis-[3,3-bis-(4- hydroxy - 3 - t - butylphenyl)butanoic acid] glycol ester, (3) tetra[3,3-bis-(4-hydroxy-3-tbutylphenyl)butanoic acid] pentaerythritol ester, (4) bis - [3,3 - bis - (4 - hydroxy - 3 - tbutylphenyl)butanoic acid] butane diol - 1,4 ester, (5) 4,4-bis-(4-hydroxy-3-(-butylphenyl) pentanoic acid dodecyl ester, (6) 1,1,2-tris- (2 - methyl - 4 - hydroxy - 5 - t - butylphenyl) butane, and (7) n - octadecyl - # - (4<SP>1</SP> - hydroxy 3,<SP>1</SP>5<SP>1</SP>-di-t-butylphenyl) propionate; and with calcium stearate, didodecyl trisulphide, dilauryl thiodipropionate and 3,3-bis-(4-hydroxy- 3-isopropylphenyl) butanoic acid dodecyl ester.
