Abstract

1280561 Screwing and unscrewing closures E GERHARDS and G NEUMANN 9 June 1970 [9 June 1969 18 Nov 1969] 28000/70 Heading B8T A device for screwing or unscrewing tops of containers, e.g. bottles, comprises a fixed strip 13 and a revolving endless friction belt 15 engaging opposite sides of the bottles 17 and causing them to rotate along the fixed strip and travel through the device, being supported by a conveyer 26, and a fixed strip 14 and revolving endless friction belt 16 engaging opposite sides of the tops 18 causing them to rotate faster than the bottles. The belts may be driven with the same velocity. The lower strip 13 and belt 15 are adjustable for bottle width and the upper strip 14 and belt 16 are adjustable for bottle height and width of screw top. An adjustable, toothed friction wheel (47), Fig. 5 (not shown), co-axial with a pulley at the bottle inlet side of the top belt 16, may co-operate with a steel friction pad (50) at the beginning of the top strip 14 to engage the tops more positively to commence the unscrewing operation. The device may be incorporated in a filling machine. The unscrewed tops may be sucked or blown off the bottles.
