Abstract

127,978. Duckham, F. W. June 10, 1918. Docks; walls; piles; piling.-In constructing a dry dock, spaced ferro-concrete piles are sunk around or along the sides of the site and an excavation is made along the middle portion, preferably in sections, concrete being filled in the sections to form the floor ; the spaces between the middle portion and the piles are then excavated in sections and concreted to complete the floor, which is preferably thicker at the centre than at the sides; and slabs or panels are placed between the piles. As shown, the piles a have longitudinal side grooves b to receive the slabs; the grooves may be in adjacent sides to form corners, or they may be angularly disposed to form bays &c. The reinforcement comprises rods or tubes d braced by wires e. The slabs c may be of uniform thickness or may taper from the centre to the vertical edges on one or both sides. Superposed slabs may have tongue and groove joints. The piles are fixed by rods f anchored in blocks of concrete j or passing through horizontal beams laid against the piles. Concrete &c. fillings may be placed behind the upper ends of the piles where these project; where the piles are flush with the ground, copings s are placed thereon and the fillings placed behind the copings.
