Abstract

1279241 Milling machines; spindles; drilling machines CINCINNATI MILACRON Ltd 4 Sept 1969 [26 July 1968] 35922/68 Headings B3B B3C and B3K A machine tool, e.g. a milling or drilling machine, has a main spindle 11 with drive means 14, and a tool holder 20 having a socket for a cutting tool the toolholder being supported coaxially with the main spindle in bearings 19 which are supported in an annular capsule 23 itself received in a tapered socket 16 of the main spindle 11. Secondary drive means are provided for driving the toolholder at a speed different from that of the main spindle, the secondary drive means comprising a secondary drive shaft 30 supported on bearings 32, 33 within the spindle 11 and driven alternatively in forward or reverse directions by gearing 50, 52, clutch means 57 gears 61, 40 or by gearing 50, 52, 53 further clutch means 57 and gears 62, 40, drive being taken from the main spindle at a gear member 36. Alternatively the secondary drive means for the toolholder may comprise a separate drive source such as a pneumatic, hydraulic or electric motor. The capsule 23 and toolholder 20 form a removable attachment removal of which allows the insertion of a tool in the main spindle 11 in conventional manner.
