Abstract

1278734 Evaporators, wiped-film type; reactor LUWA AG 20 March 1970 [21 March 1969] 13539/70 Headings BIB and BIX A viscous liquid, supplied through inlet 14, is mixed on the inner surface of a chamber 12 by means of a rotor 42 to which are secured two rows of vane stubs 44 inclined to the axis of rotation of the rotor and having gaps therebetween, the rotor also carrying two axiallyextending wiper blades 46 which are radially offset at less than 90‹ with respect to a row of vane stubs. The wiper blades follow the vane stubbs during the rotation of the rotor. The blades 46 repeatedly spread the liquid as a thin film, while the stubs 44 displace it in the form of drops towards the outlet 16. In the case of an evaporator, heating-medium is passed through jackets 20 and 26; and vapours ascend through rotating blades 48 and are withdrawn through outlet 34. The treated liquid flows through grooves 52 in rim member 50 and is discharged through outlet 16 by means of rotary worm 60. In modified constructions (Figs. 3 and 4, not shown) the outlet margin of each wiper blade is bent in a direction opposite to the direction of rotation of the rotor. The apparatus may be used as a reactor, the reactants being mixed prior to introduction into chamber 12. When carrying out exothermic reactions, jacket 20 may be used for cooling.
