Abstract

1278629 Filtration process MAGYAR TUDOMANYOS AKADEMIA 26 June 1969 [30 Aug 1968] 32436/69 Heading BID A dilute suspension is filtered at a low differential pressure through one sector of a moving filter surface thereby obtaining a turbid filtrate and a deposit of solids on the filter surface which acts as a filter aid whereby a clear filtrate is obtained by applying a higher differential pressure to a further sector, into which the filter surface moves from the first sector, the turbid filtrate being recycled to the upstream side of the filter surface. Several turbid filtrates may be obtained at progressively increasing differential pressures, all being recycled. Turbid filtrate may be concentrated, e.g. in another filter, before recycling. Fig. 5 shows a vacuum drum-travelling band type filter 62-76, from which clear filtrate is discharged from one drum sector at 71 while turbid filtrate from an upstream sector (in direction of drum rotation) is recycled at 69 to a rotary disc vacuum filter 51 - 59. This latter is arranged to obtain turbid and clear filtrates from different sectors and also to deliver reverse flow liquid to one sector to clear the disc. The turbid filtrate and thickened slurry drawn from outlet 59 are returned to filter 62 - 76. The initial feed is by inlet 51 to the disc filter, and the final cake is discharged where filter band 72 passes round roller 74 and falls on to conveyor belt 75. Filter 62 - 76 has a stirrer 64. Fig. 3 (not shown) illustrates a rotary drum vacuum filter for performing the inventive process, with provision for obtaining two filtrates, discharging cake from the drum by reverse flow air, and slurry agitator (31). Fig. 4 (not shown) illustrates a rotary drum pressure filter, with two inlets delivering suspension to different sectors of the casing around the drum. Both pressure and vacuum are applied to respective filtering sectors and a scraper removes the cake. Fig. 2 (not shown) illustrates the fixed part of a rotary valve with an adjustable partition separating turbid and clear filtrate receiving sectors.
