1278173 Friction draught and buffing gear CARDWELL WESTINGHOUSE CO 2 July 1970 [15 Sept 1969] 32176/70 Heading B7T In a combined buffing and draft gear 10 for mounting in the draft gear pocket 12 of a railroad car, a housing 22 has adjacent an open end 26 a friction chamber 28 having inner walls 30, which are slidably engaged by friction shoes 32, which are operably engaged by a cluster 34 of articulated wedge members 36, and the housing has formed on a closed end, consisting of wall 24, a boss 48 on which is mounted a pedestal 74. Between the wall 24 and the shoes 32 is a helical spring 42 and between the pedestal 74 and a seating member 76 is a tubular core member 72 of natural or synthetic rubber providing additional resistance. The wedge members 36 are operably engaged by an angularly self adjusting thrust member 38, which is engaged by a follower 40 interposed between the draft gear 10 and lugs 18. The outer surface 120 of core member 72 has a cylindrical portion 122 and a frustoconical portion 124 and in the position of full closure, the volume of core member 72 is substantially equal to the space between pedestal 74, member 76, an axial assembly bolt 46 and the inner diameter of the spring 42, without appreciable squeezing of the material of the core member 72 between the coils of the spring 42.
