Abstract
1277191 Pyrotechnic compositions AVIATION, MINISTER OF 19 April 1961 [22 April 1960] 14297/60 Heading C1D A rubbery pyrotechnic composition is made by mixing at a temperature above 75‹ C. (for example 90-110‹ C.) a polysulphide liquid polymer, a rubber-forming agent, an oxidizing agent, and a substantial proportion, for example, 25-60% by weight, of a metallic powder, and curing the mixed composition. Preferably mixing is carried out at low pressure to remove gas and water. Rubber-forming agents specified are lead peroxide and a mixture of carbon black, p-quinone dioxime and diphenyl guanidine. Suitable metal powders are magnesium, aluminium and zinc. The oxidizing agent may be an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal nitrate or perchlorate. In examples, flare compositions are made from "Thiokol" (Registered Trade Mark) rubber, magnesium, and potassium perchlorate; for a green flare, barium nitrate and boron are included, for a red flare strontium nitrate, and for a yellow flare sodium nitrate. Smoke compositions are made from Thiokol rubber, zinc, zinc oxide, potassium perchlorate, and hexachloroethane, with the addition of coloured substances if desired. Reference is made also to the addition of magnesium stearate to assist blending and of oxalates. The mixed composition may be extruded and cured by heating at 70‹ C. for 18-24 hours.
