Abstract

1276294 Measuring fluid-pressure electrically DEFENCE SECRETARY OF STATE FOR 25 Aug 1969 [24 May 1968] 24839/68 Heading G1N A transducer for measuring fluid-pressure comprises a diaphragm 13, Fig. 1, exposed on its upper face to the test pressure and attached on its lower face to a moving coil 20 in the gap of a permanent magnet 22, 22a and also to a moving contact 24 co-operating with a spring-biased fixed contact 25. The coil 20 is energized via contacts 24, 25 causing the coil to raise contact 24 until the arm carrying contact 25 meets a fixed stop 26, whereupon the circuit is broken and contact 24 is again forced down to a position partly determined by the test pressure. Thus the mark/space ratio of the current through contacts 24, 25 is indicative of the pressure, which is measured by the average current through coil 20 or by controlling a separate oscillator 32. In another embodiment, Fig.3, the coil 20 is energized from the oscillator 32. An increase in test pressure causes the mark/space ratio of the output from the oscillator 32 to increase and the average current through coil 20 to increase to a value maintaining the mean position of the moving system substantially constant. In an alternative arrangement the moving system including coil 20 is replaced by a variable reactance forming part of a non-contact-making switching means replacing contacts 24, 25.
