A relative motion transducer comprises a magnet 1 movable relatively to a core member 3 which completes a magnetic circuit F 1 whose cross-section area a in the region of the magnet varies as the magnet moves along the member 3, a coil 5 being wound on the member 3. A second magnetic circuit F 2 also with a coil 5, is separated from F1 by a non-magnetic insert 6 between two parts of the core member 3, the cross sectional area b of the second magnetic circuit F 2 in the region of the magnet varying oppositely to a with movement of the magnet. The ration a to b varies linearly with movement of the member. The member 1 may be a permanent magnet in which case the transducer is responsive to relative speed, or an A. C. excited electromagnet in which case the transducer measures relative position. The core 3 is rectangular, and may be planar (also Fig. 1, not shown) or it may be arcuate (Fig. 3, not shown) to measure arcuate motion; or it may be completely closed on itself to define two cylinders (9, Fig. 4, not shown) which measure rotary movement of a magnetic member (11), each cylinder having two non-magnetic strips.
